Flavio Laina is head of the Cartel Settlements unit in the Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission since June 2012. Previously, from March 2009, he has been head of unit responsible for Merger control in the sectors of Energy and Environment. Flavio Laina joined the European Commission in 1994, after a professional experience in a company managing investment funds in Milano, Italy. During the first five years in DG Competition, he worked in the area of State aid control. Between 1999 and 2009, he held a number of positions in the Antitrust and Cartel areas where he started leading investigation teams in 2003 and became subsequently deputy head of unit and head of unit. He graduated in Economics at Bocconi University in Milano, Italy and obtained an LLM in European Studies at the UCL, Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium.
